Zamalek president Mortada Mansour sentenced to two years in prison

Mortada Mansour has been sentenced to two years in prison as the court ruled in favour of Mahmoud El-Khatib, Al Ahly announced on Wednesday.

Al Ahly chairman Mahmoud El-Khatib had filed two defamation cases against Mortada Mansour for the latter’s comments back in 2021.

The pair have had a tense relationship in the past with both clubs filing lawsuits to claim the “African Club of the Century” title two years ago.

El-Khatib had previously claimed that Mansour was taking advantage of his parliamentary immunity, which was misused by the Zamalek’s president.

However, Mansour had lost the Parliamentary elections in late 2020, meaning his immunity had been lifted starting from January last year.

The 69-year-old is set for more repercussions as he recently lost two defamation lawsuits brought to court by El-Khatib.

The controversial lawyer now faces two years behind bars in addition to financial sanctions for the remarks he made, according to Al Ahly’s statement.

“The Economic Court decided to sentence Mortada Mansour to two years in prison for the two cases brought by Mahmoud El-Khatib who was publicly slandered by the former through the media,” Al Ahly said in a statement.

“The court today ruled to imprison the defendant for one year in each case, fine him EGP 10,000 and another EGP 10,000 as a temporary compensation for El-Khatib.”
