Rulani Mokwena: Al Ahly complain about referees when they lose

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has criticised Al Ahly before their clash in the African Football League.

The South African giants edged Al Ahly 1-0 in the first leg of the African Football League semi-finals on Saturday through Thapelo Maseko.

The game also witnessed late controversy as Al Ahly had shouts for a penalty, but the referee decided not to award the Reds a spot-kick.

Just hours later, Al Ahly released a statement confirming they filed a complaint to CAF about the refereeing errors during the game.

Rulani Mokwena responded to their claims before the return leg and believes Al Ahly’s focus should only be on football.

“I’m surprised that Al Ahly complained about everything,” Mokwena said in the press conference.

“Before the first leg, Al Ahly complained about the kick-off time, yet they are allowed to have the game at the time that suits them, but you hear no complaints from Mamelodi Sundowns.

“They only complain about referees when they lose. Jose Mourinho once said that when a big club starts to look for other factors apart from football, they start losing their status as a big club.

“I hope that’s not the case with Al Ahly because they are the flagship of African football. The rest of the world and Europe look at Al Ahly as a reflection of what African football represents,” he added.
