Mauritania confirm death of goalkeeper Mohamed El-Mokhtar

The Mauritanian Football Association (FFRIM) have confirmed the death of U21 goalkeeper Mohamed El-Mokhtar on Saturday.

Multiple reports had noted that Mohamed El-Mokhtar was involved in a violent collision with one of his teammates in training for his club AS Douanes.

The 22-year-old suffered a concussion and was rushed to an intensive care unit, where he passed away after falling into a coma.

The tragic news resulted in the FFRIM cancelling the Mauritanian Cup final between Douanes and Nouadhibou which was set to take place on the same day.

“The FFRIM mourns the death of national team goalkeeper Mohamed El-Mokhtar, who passed away this Saturday morning in Nouakchott,” a statement said.

“The deceased young man was known for the great love he had for his country as well as his talent, his commitment and his discipline.

“He set an example among his colleagues for his sincerity in work and professional commitment, with high morals and great respect.

“Despite his young age, he quickly moved up the goalkeeping ranks until he quickly reached the squad of the first national team.

“On this tragic occasion, we extend our sincerest condolences and sympathy to his family on this great affliction.”
