Wydad Casablanca knocked out of CAF Champions League

Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca have bid farewell to the CAF Champions League despite defeating ASEC Mimosas today in the last group stage round.

Wydad hosted already-qualified ASEC Mimosas in the final game, while Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy travelled to face Tanzanian giants Simba at the same time.

To have a chance of advancing to the knockout rounds, Wydad needed to win against the Ivorian side, but while hoping Galaxy hold Simba in Dar es Salaam.

The Moroccans managed to do their part by winning 1-0, thanks to Montasser Lahtimi’s winner; however, Simba thrashed their opponents 6-0.

Both results saw Wydad remain third with nine points, equal on points with Simba; however, the head-to-head results saw the Tanzanians go through instead.

Simba had defeat Wydad 2-0 in Tanzania after losing 1-0 in Morocco, giving them the edge and securing them a historic spot in the quarter-finals.
