Nigerian journalist Oluwashina Okeleji revealed to BBC that the player is suffering from a thigh muscle tear he sustained during the Africa Cup of Nations.

Troost-Ekong suffered this injury in the second round of the group stage of the 2023 AFCON, in the game between Nigeria and Ivory Coast. Despite the setback, William won the MVP of the tournament.
