Carlos Queiroz close to taking charge of Iraq – Report

Former Egypt national team manager, Carlos Queiroz, is reportedly close to taking charge of the Iraq national team.

The Egyptian FA (EFA) announced the departure of national team head coach Carlos Queiroz after just over six months of taking charge.

Since last September, the Portuguese had led the Pharaohs to the semi-finals of the Arab Cup in Qatar as well as the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, which he lost to Senegal on penalties.

Just a few weeks later, Queiroz led Egypt to the final round of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, but his side fell short once again against the Teranga Lions in another penalty shootout defeat, which pushed the EFA to sack him.

However, it appears that the former Manchester United assistant coach has many suitors.

According to Emirati news outlet Al-Khaleej, Australia, Tunisia and Iran have all approached Queiroz take charge of their national teams.

Yet, Queiroz opted for Iraq who, according to the report, have been in negotiation with the 69-year-old for over one month.

This comes after the Iraq Football Association parted ways with national team manager Abdul-Ghani Shahad.
