Ever since Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet arrived at Aston Villa, the former Al Ahly winger and Anwar El Ghazi have both been competing for a starting place at Villa Park, producing stellar performances throughout the season as Kingfut’s Ingy Fahmy demonstrates the key differences between both wingers.
In this article, we are going to analyze the performances Trezeguet and El Ghazi, based on stats with their club so far during the 19/20 Premier League season.
To begin with, we will have a quick brief about both players, the 25-year-old Egyptian was purchased for £8.75m from Turkish club, Kasımpaşa in 2019 while Anwar El Ghazi joined in 2018 on loan from Lille before signing a four-year contract with the club a year later for an undisclosed fee.
Although the stats have shown that Trezeguet has played one game less than El-Ghazi in the Premier League so far, however, the latter played 358 minutes more and that’s due to him starting in 21 matches while Trezeguet made the starting lineup in only 13. matches. Despite El Ghazi playing more minutes this season, only one goal separates the two of them. The Egyptian has netted three goals so far while the Dutchman has scored four.
When it comes to shots on target, El Ghazi has seven more than Trezeguet so far but 13 more than him for shots off target. As for the shooting accuracy and pass completion, Trezeguet has more than his teammate by quite a few especially in the shooting accuracy.
As for the team-play stats, El Ghazi has 3 more assists as well as 3 more big chances created than Trezeguet which means he has participated in 3 more goals for the club and participated more with the team.
As much as the attacking stats are important and result in wins but sometimes, the defensive contributions are important to the midfielders as well. Taking a quick look at the goals conceded, El Ghazi has 40 while Trezeguet has 22, which is less, but again the minutes played for the Egyptian are still less than the Dutchman.
Both midfielders are becoming very iconic in Aston Villa this season. Hence, it’s very hard to compare especially that the comparison is not apple to apple for the huge difference of minutes played.
However, El Ghazi definitely has a better goal-scoring ratio and created more big chances and assists than Trezeguet, meaning participation in more team wins. But as mentioned, Trezeguet has more shots on target, passing accuracy, and less conceded goals. With that being said, I believe if Trezeguet is given a chance, he could possibly top El Ghazi’s stats.
Time to reminisce some goals? Our favourite is the Egyptian-made goal, scored by Trezeguet and assisted by Ahmed Elmohamady to send Aston Villa to Wembley for the EFL Cup finals:
