Over the past month, Mohamed Safwat has represented Egypt at a level unseen in a long time in Egyptian tennis.
Qualifying for the
first round of the Australian Open in January was a boost of confidence for the
Egyptian tennis man. Ranked 157th worldwide after his Australian
Open exit in the round of 126, Safwat went directly into his following
tournament.
He participated and won the Launceston International tournament held from the 3rd to the 9th of February in Launceston, Australia, claiming Egypt’s first title since 1996. With this tournament win, he managed to get his highest career ranking at 130th among male tennis players worldwide.
Following his win in Launceston he participated in a few other tournaments including the Bengaluru Challenger open, where he managed to get into the round of 16 before losing out to the Italian Stefano Travaglia 6-2 and 7-6.
After that he went to participate in the Dubai Championships, losing to the eventual finalist German Philipp Kohlschreiber.
When it comes to the
doubles scene, he also participated in the Launceston International, but
unfortunately his run alongside the Slovenian Blaz Kavcic was cut short,
suffering a defeat in the round of 32, against the Australian duo who managed
to get to the semi-finals, Calum Puttergill and Jacob Grills.
Safwat finishes the
month ranked 132nd worldwide in singles and 730th in the
doubles’ ranking after starting it off as 173rd and 505th.
It is clear the he is
finally getting to display himself on the world stage and at KingFut we are all
hoping that the best is yet to come for him.
