Tunisia in 'urgent' talks with Egypt-eligible Haissem Hassan over international switch

The Tunisian national team have reportedly opened talks with Egypt-eligible starlet Haissem Hassan to represent the Eagles of Carthage.

Born in France to an Egyptian father and a Tunisian mother, Hassan is eligible to represent the three countries, having played for the Blues at the U-17 and U-18 levels and even made their 2019 U-17 World Cup squad.

Former Egypt manager Carlos Queiroz contacted the player over a potential call-up in 2021, but Hassan has never had a chance to represent the Pharaohs since then.

There was also a competition last year from both Egypt and Tunisia to convince the player to represent either country, but Hassan opted to take time to concentrate on his club career and postponed any decision.

However, it now looks like Tunisia are opening talks again with Hassan as manager Faouzi Benzarti wants to strengthen the Tunisian squad with new names.

According to Tunisian media, Benzarti has urgently opened channels of communication with Haithem Hassan and is very keen on the player.

Earlier this summer, Hassan completed a move to Spanish club Real Oviedo from Villareal permanently for a reported fee of €1.5 million.

The 22-year-old has made four appearances in LaLiga 2 for Oviedo so far, having also had spells at Sporting Gijón, CD Mirandés, and LB Châteauroux during his career.
