Kidnapped Libya forward Mohamed Zaabia released by authorities

Libya international Mohamed Zaabia has returned to his home after he was kidnapped by local authorities, his family have announced.

Reports have confirmed that Zaabia was initially detained for publicly insulting the Stability Support Apparatus (SSA), a security institution affiliated with the Presidential Council.

Following his comments, the 34-year-old went missing on Thursday as head of the National Human Rights Committee in Libya (NHRLC) Ahmed Hamza demanded his release.

“We call on the Libyan authorities to release him without any delay because this is unacceptable,” Hamza said.

Three days later, Zaabia’s family issued a statement announcing his release as he is set to return to football and continue his recovery.

Zaabia currently plies his trade at 18-time Libyan champions Ittihad Tripoli and had sustained a severe foot injury three months ago.
