Al Ahly open Champions League campaign with win over Medeama

Al Ahly have earned a 3-0 victory over Ghana’s Medeama in their opening game of the new CAF Champions League campaign.

The reigning champions were drawn in Group D of the competition along with Algerian giants CR Belouizdad, Young Africans, and Medeama.

Their first encounter came at home against the latter as head coach Marcel Koller made some tweaks to his starting lineup.

Mahmoud Kahraba was deployed upfront in place of the injured Anthony Modeste with Karim Fouad making a rare start on the right flank.

Al Ahly had a rampant start to the game and nearly took the lead in the opening seconds with Emam Ashour hitting the bar and Kahraba’s follow-up was also aimed at the woodwork in quick succession.

Despite playing in second gear in the first half, Al Ahly managed to find the breakthrough after the restart and took the lead after 66 minutes through Kahraba’s header.

Nine minutes later, Hussein El-Shahat added his name to the scoresheet after tucking home the rebound from a tight angle.

Second-half substitute Salah Mohsen was also on target with three minutes remaining to full-time and netted his first goal in the CAF competitions since 2021 to secure all three points.
