Cliffs of Moher

Season: All-year-round.

Getting There & Away:

  • For those interested in hiking the entire 14 km coastal trail, the best option is to overnight in Doolin and then catch the shuttle bus the following day to the Kilconnel Car Park near Hags Head. From there set off on foot back to Doolin. You can purchase food and refreshments at the Cliffs of Mohr Visitors Centre along the way.
  • For those interested in a shorter option, there are regular shuttle buses running between the Visitors Center and both Doolin and Kilconnel Car Park / Liscannor.

Maps / Info:

  • The Cliffs of Mohr are located in County Clare and at their highest point tower 214 m (702 ft) over the Atlantic Ocean. Receiving around 1.5 million visitors per year, they rate as Ireland’s most popular natural attraction. That being said, the vast majority of tourists stick mainly to the immediate area around the Visitors Centre, which means that coastal walkers will have the opportunity to experience this extraordinary natural wonder without having to battle the crowds.
  • No detailed map is necessary. Simply follow the coast-hugging path between Doolin and Hags Head (or visa versa).

Route / Conditions:

  • The trail is well-marked and easy to follow from start to finish. A heads up to those with vertigo; there are some sections that skirt the cliff’s edge. Stay on the trail, look where you are going and you’ll be fine.
  • Definitely an afternoon hike. When the weather is clear and the sun is setting, the westward facing cliffs are an incredible sight to behold.

Overview:

  • This is more of a cruisy afternoon stroll than a strenuous full-day excursion. Nonetheless, the scenery is stunning and if you happen to find yourself in this part of the emerald isle, it definitely rates as a must-do. I highly recommend having a post-hike Guinness at McDermott’s Pub upon your return to Doolin.
